WHAT IS THE SCA?

The The Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA for short, is an international, not-for-profit, educational, practical history society, recreating the arts and skills of pre-17th century Europe. Our “Known World” consists of 20 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. People in the SCA learn by doing and then teaching others either formally or informally. We study and practice the arts, crafts and martial activities of Europe in the Middle Ages and Renaissance such calligraphy, cooking, armoring, metalworking, carpentry, needlework, archery and fencing (to name just a few) — within an all-ages social group. We sew period style clothing in period style materials, hold feasts, tournaments, play games, participate in period dances, and generally have a good time. Individual members can skim over the basics of an activity or really explore a subject in an in-depth and exacting manner. This ability to participate at your own level of comfort is part of what attracts many to the SCA. It is also a great place to make friends and learn transferable skills.
